As a rough guide, lips look natural when the upper lip makes up about 40 percent of the total and the lower lip about 60; make them equal and they tend to look done.

Days two and three are usually the peak, sometimes uneven or bruised, and this is when most worried messages come in; it is nearly always swelling, not placement.

Getting there takes an assessment that treats your lips as part of your face rather than a stand-alone target, and an injector willing to place less than you asked for when less is what the lip needs.

Why it counts as a medical procedure. The upper and lower labial arteries run through the lip, near the vermilion border and usually just under the muscle, and their position differs from person to person. Safe placement depends on knowing where they are.
Common: swelling, bruising, redness, tenderness, itching and small firm spots, usually gone within two weeks.
Uncommon: infection, lumps or nodules that need treatment, and unevenness that is corrected at the two-week review.
Rare but serious: filler entering a blood vessel and blocking blood flow, which can lead to tissue death, loss of vision or stroke.
