Meeting a BMI number can open the conversation about weight loss medication. It does not decide it. At InjectCo MedSpa Argyle, a health review and lab work come first. Then a licensed prescriber working under our Medical Director, Dr. Josh Allen, D.O., decides whether any medication fits you.
Our weight loss clinic is on FM 407 in Bartonville, in the same building as Cloud 9 Salon and Spa, a short drive from Argyle, Lantana and Double Oak. You can also do the program by telehealth.
Plenty of online services will mail a GLP-1 prescription after a short form. In a physician-supervised weight loss program, the form is only the first step. Someone reads your history and your labs, someone follows how you respond, and a dose changes only when a review supports it. You can reach that team by phone, by video or at the clinic on FM 407.
Body mass index, or BMI, is a screening number. The FDA-approved weight management medicines are labeled for adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related health problem such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or sleep apnea. The NIDDK describes the same thresholds as the point where medication may be considered.
A BMI in that range tells a clinician that prescription treatment may be worth evaluating. It does not tell them:
BMI is not a diagnosis on its own, and it does not choose a drug or a dose. That is why every Argyle patient goes through screening before anything is prescribed.
Patients sometimes come in already knowing their BMI, or already asking for semaglutide or tirzepatide by name. We do not choose treatment from either of those things alone.
The BMI threshold tells us that prescription weight-management treatment may be worth evaluating. Then we look at your medical history, current medications, previous weight loss attempts, relevant lab results, side-effect risks and the reason you are seeking treatment. Someone can meet a BMI threshold and still need a different medical evaluation before we prescribe anything.
If medication is appropriate, we explain which option is being considered, what it is expected to do, which risks matter for you and what we will monitor. The goal of screening is not to find a way to qualify everyone for a prescription. It is to decide whether this program is appropriate in the first place.
Weight loss prescriptions at InjectCo are written by a licensed prescriber working under Dr. Josh Allen, D.O., Medical Director for all nine InjectCo clinics in Texas. As Medical Director, he oversees the clinical standards behind InjectCo’s treatments. He earned his osteopathic medical degree at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, trained in emergency medicine through a Texas A&M residency, and still works as an emergency physician.
The federal NPI Registry lists him as Joshua Dewayne Allen, D.O., in Texas, under National Provider Identifier 1982904033. An NPI identifies a provider but does not prove a license, so the Texas Medical Board is the place to check any Texas physician’s license.
At the clinic you will also meet our nurse injectors. Chloe, RN, earned her nursing degree (BSN) at Chamberlain University and holds InjectCo’s own Advanced Aesthetic Injector Certification. Cameron and Crystal are the other nurse injectors on the Argyle team. Aesthetic injector training is a separate qualification from weight-management care, so ask the clinic which licensed nurse handles your check-ins.
Neither compounded semaglutide nor compounded tirzepatide is an FDA-approved product. Before a compounded drug reaches patients, the FDA does not check its safety, effectiveness or quality in the way it checks an approved medicine.
The FDA advises that compounded drugs should only be used in patients whose medical needs cannot be met by an FDA-approved drug. A compounded preparation is not a generic version of an approved brand, it is not the same manufactured product, and it has not been reviewed for equivalence.
If a compounded medication is considered for your plan, your clinician should tell you the exact product being prescribed, which pharmacy or facility prepared it, and why that option is being considered. The FDA explains its position in its concerns with unapproved GLP-1 drugs used for weight loss and its compounding questions and answers.
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. GLP-1 is a hormone your gut releases after eating. It signals fullness, slows how quickly the stomach empties and helps regulate blood sugar, and semaglutide acts on the same receptor.
Tirzepatide is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist. It activates both of those hormone pathways.
Each medicine comes in more than one approved product, and each product has its own approved uses, doses and label. The NIDDK lists FDA-approved semaglutide and tirzepatide among the medicines approved for long-term weight management in adults. This page describes the clinic’s injectable program. Two receptors do not make one medicine better for everyone. The choice depends on your history, other medications, lab results, the warnings that apply to you, how you have tolerated similar medicines and what is available. Read more about tirzepatide weight loss treatment.
STEP 1 enrolled adults with obesity or overweight who did not have diabetes. They took commercially manufactured semaglutide 2.4 mg once a week alongside a lifestyle program. After 68 weeks, average body weight changed by about -14.9%, compared with -2.4% on placebo (NEJM, 2021). This study evaluated the commercially manufactured semaglutide used in the trial. It did not evaluate any compounded preparation, and the trial average does not predict an individual patient’s result.
SURMOUNT-1 enrolled adults with obesity or overweight who did not have diabetes. They took commercially manufactured tirzepatide once a week alongside lifestyle support. At the highest dose, 15 mg, average body weight changed by about -20.9% over 72 weeks, compared with -3.1% on placebo (NEJM, 2022). The result came from the product studied under a controlled trial protocol. It does not establish equivalent effectiveness for a compounded tirzepatide preparation.
An average hides a wide spread, with some participants losing much more and others much less. Trial participants followed a set protocol with scheduled visits. Your own result depends on your health, the product you are prescribed, the dose you tolerate and how long you stay on it. No one can promise you a number in advance.
Start. Your first dose follows the instructions for your exact prescription. Starting doses are set low so your body can adjust, and they are not meant to produce the full effect.
Week 2. Your first nurse check-in, at the clinic or by video. We ask how you feel, what you are eating, which side effects you have noticed and how your weight is moving.
Weeks 3 and 4. A second check-in, then your first monthly dose review.
The scale often moves slowly in month one. Keep eating enough protein and staying active, since both help protect muscle while you lose weight.
We do not raise a dose because a date on the calendar arrived. At each monthly review we look at how you are tolerating the current dose, how you are responding and what you told us at your check-ins. A dose changes only when all of that supports it.
Holding steady is a legitimate clinical decision, not a stall. If side effects are still settling, or your progress is steady on the current dose, staying where you are can be the right call. The prescriber makes that decision with you, and we do not publish a fixed schedule because the right pace depends on the product and on you.
The most common side effects with the approved GLP-1 and GIP/GLP-1 medicines are nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation and stomach pain or discomfort. They tend to show up early and after a dose increase. Smaller meals help. So do eating slowly, stopping when you feel full and drinking enough fluids. Warnings differ by product but can include inflammation of the pancreas, gallbladder disease, dehydration that can lead to kidney injury, severe stomach problems and serious allergic reactions. The chance of low blood sugar rises when these medicines are combined with insulin or with diabetes medicines that make the body release more insulin, such as sulfonylureas.
Tell your prescribing clinician about every prescription, over-the-counter medicine and supplement you take. These medicines slow stomach emptying, and the clinical team will decide whether anything else you take needs extra monitoring. Get emergency care for severe stomach pain that does not go away or spreads to your back, or for swelling in your face, lips, tongue or throat.
Compounded medication concentrations can vary. The FDA has received reports of adverse events, some requiring hospitalization, linked to dosing errors with compounded injectable semaglutide. Some patients drew up more than the prescribed dose from a multiple-dose vial, and confusion between milliliters, milligrams and syringe “units” contributed. In some cases health care providers miscalculated doses (FDA alert).
Use only the measuring and administration instructions supplied for your exact prescription. Do not copy another patient’s dose, and do not convert milligrams to syringe units with an online chart. If your vial, concentration or syringe looks different from what you were shown, call the clinic before you inject.

Some patients need another evaluation first, or are better served by waiting. That can include a recent change in health, symptoms that need a diagnosis, or medicines that need to be reviewed alongside a new one. We will tell you if that applies to you and why.
Lab work is part of the program and comes before a first prescription, and the prescriber reviews the results as part of the decision. Ask your clinician which tests are being ordered for you and what each one checks.
After you start, a nurse checks in every two weeks and your dose is reviewed every month. If something at a check-in or in your results needs a closer look, the prescriber decides the next step.
Appetite usually comes back when the medicine stops, and weight often follows. In the extension of the STEP 1 trial, people who stopped semaglutide regained about two-thirds of their lost weight within a year. That was an average in one trial, not a prediction for you, but it does mean the exit deserves as much planning as the start.
Your plan after reaching a goal is set with the prescriber, based on the medication, your health history and how you responded. Talk about it early, and do not stop or change your dose on your own. Whatever the plan, keep the eating and activity habits you built during the program.

Semaglutide and tirzepatide are prescription medicines, available only after a medical evaluation and a prescribing decision. The approved products are meant to be used with a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.
Label contraindications. The FDA-approved semaglutide and tirzepatide weight-management products must not be used by people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), people with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), or people who have had a serious allergic reaction to the medicine or its ingredients. In rodent studies both caused thyroid C-cell tumors. It is not known whether they cause these tumors in people.
Pregnancy. The labels say to stop the medicine when pregnancy is recognized, because weight loss is not appropriate during pregnancy. InjectCo does not prescribe weight-loss medication during pregnancy, based on current medication safety information and clinic policy.

Warnings vary by product and can include pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, dehydration and kidney injury, severe stomach problems, serious allergic reactions, and low blood sugar with insulin or insulin secretagogues. Report mood changes or thoughts of self-harm right away. Tell your prescriber about every medicine and supplement you take. Tirzepatide can make birth control pills less effective for a time after you start and after each dose increase.
