Two registered nurses run laser hair removal at our Fort Worth clinic: Jill, BSN, RN, and Cameron, BSN, RN. Both work on the Candela GentleMax Pro, and both begin with the same review of skin, hair and medicines, followed by a small test patch, before any series is discussed.
Jill spent her earlier nursing career in pediatric critical care, and her aesthetic work has put her beside some well-known Texas providers.
Being an RN is not, by itself, permission to use a laser. Under Texas Board of Nursing Position Statement 15.9, laser delivery can sit within nursing practice when there is a valid order, the nurse has the needed education, experience and knowledge, that training is documented, and medical backup is available. Laser hair removal also falls under the TDLR laws and rules (16 TAC Chapter 118, amended in 2026) and the TDLR laser FAQ. Check any Texas nurse on the Board of Nursing license lookup. When someone asks how many laser sessions they need, we do not want to sell a package before we know whether the hair is actually a good target.
The first things we look at are the hair color and thickness, the skin in the area being treated, recent sun or tanning, medications, and anything else that could change how the skin responds to light. Then we test a small area. That test patch is not a box we check. It gives us one more piece of information before we decide whether to go ahead and what kind of plan makes sense.
Some patients are good laser candidates but need a different wavelength or a more conservative plan. Some need to wait because the skin is not ready that day. And some have hair with so little pigment that laser is unlikely to give them the result they are paying for. The treatment series should come after that assessment, not before it.
Our Fort Worth clinic uses the Candela GentleMax Pro, FDA-cleared (not FDA-approved) under 510(k) K140122. It holds two wavelengths: a 755 nm Alexandrite laser plus a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser. The 510(k) summary lists hair reduction at both wavelengths across Fitzpatrick skin types I to VI, tanned skin included.
A cleared indication is not a personal safety decision. Your skin that day, its pigment, recent sun and other clinical factors still decide whether treatment should go ahead, and which approach Jill or Cameron uses.
Selective photothermolysis means using a wavelength of light that is preferentially absorbed by a target, here the pigment in and around the hair, so enough heat reaches the follicle while limiting unnecessary heating of the surrounding skin. The skin still absorbs some energy, which is why settings are chosen person by person.
Laser hair reduction works best on hairs in active growth, a stage called anagen, when the hair is anchored at the root and carries the most pigment (StatPearls). Only part of your hair is in that stage at once, so treatment is spaced out. The AAD says most patients can be treated about every 4 to 6 weeks, though timing varies by area and response. White and gray hairs have little or no melanin, so the laser has little to find, and blonde or red hair often responds weakly.
Hair color, hair thickness, skin condition, recent tanning and the area being treated all affect whether laser is likely to be useful. At Fort Worth, the skin and hair assessment comes before the final series recommendation. A test patch gives the clinical team one more point of information before the written plan and total price are finalized. So the number of visits is not chosen just because a package contains a set number of sessions.

The GentleMax Pro has cleared indications covering Fitzpatrick skin types I to VI. Your current skin condition, pigment, recent sun and other factors still decide whether treatment should go ahead. The 1064 nm wavelength is commonly chosen for deeper skin tones because skin-surface melanin absorbs less of it.
A 2011 study of 150 people with skin types IV to VI, mostly type IV (PMID 21519944), reported a mean of 8.9 long-pulsed Nd:YAG treatments, a mean hair reduction of 54.3% and no complications in 86%; the complications it did see were temporary, mostly darker patches. Those are one older study’s averages, not a prediction for you. A 2023 network meta-analysis of 13 randomized trials with 652 participants (PMID 37493187) found lasers and intense pulsed light effective for hair reduction, with only temporary side effects and no clear long-term winner among laser types.

Not always. If your skin and the patch look right, treatment can follow in the same visit. If your skin is irritated or recently tanned, or the response needs a closer look, we wait and book treatment for later.
The AAD says most patients need 2 to 6 laser treatments, and a StatPearls review describes 4 to 6 as a common starting range. These are general figures, not a promise. Your range is set after your test patch and adjusted as your hair responds.
The AAD says most patients can be treated about every 4 to 6 weeks. The right gap still depends on the area, your hair cycle and how your skin responded, so your nurse sets it at each visit.
It depends on the area. The AAD notes that an upper lip takes minutes, while a large area such as the back or legs can take more than an hour. Your first visit also includes the skin and hair review and a test patch, so allow extra time.
Permanent hair reduction is an FDA device term. In the K140122 summary, it means fewer hairs grow back over the long term after a completed course of treatment, with the drop still holding when checked 6, 9 and 12 months later. It does not mean every hair is gone forever. Some regrowth and maintenance sessions are common, and hormones can bring facial hair back in women.
It feels different for everyone and changes by area. The AAD says many people compare each pulse to warm pinpricks or a rubber band snap. The GentleMax Pro sprays a burst of cooling mist right before each pulse, which helps comfort but does not remove every sensation. Tell your nurse how it feels as you go.
Yes, shave the area before your visit as we explain when you book. Do not wax or pluck, because the laser needs the hair root in place. We give you the timing when you book; a StatPearls review suggests avoiding both for about 6 weeks before treatment.
Tell us about any sun, tanning bed or self-tanner use. The AAD advises not tanning before laser. The GentleMax Pro’s FDA wording covers tanned skin, but that is not a reason to treat a fresh tan, and we often wait. After treatment, keep skin out of direct sun and skip tanning beds.
Often not well. The laser targets melanin, the pigment in the hair, and white or gray hair has little or none. Red and blonde hair carry less of the pigment the laser absorbs most, so results can be weak. We check your hair first and tell you plainly if laser is a poor match before you buy a series. For hair a laser cannot target, electrolysis, which treats one follicle at a time, is an option to ask a dermatologist about.

Yes. Back, chest and shoulders are common requests from men, along with the neck and beard line. Large areas take longer, and StatPearls notes chest hair can respond less well than underarm hair, so each area gets its own plan.
You pick the coverage, anything from a bikini-line cleanup to full Brazilian coverage, and we confirm it before we start. The session happens in a private room, with the same review and test patch as any area.
No. InjectCo postpones elective laser hair removal during pregnancy according to current clinic policy. Breastfeeding? Mention it at your visit so our clinical team can decide on timing. Your plan can restart after a fresh skin and hair check.
Not automatically. A 2017 JAMA Dermatology expert consensus (PMID 28658462) found insufficient evidence to require delaying laser hair removal for people taking or recently finished with isotretinoin. The AAD still asks you to tell your clinician if you have taken it, so we review your dose, timing and skin before deciding. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.
Every prescription, over-the-counter medicine, supplement and skin product, because some change how skin reacts to light. Also tell us about infections, irritation, cold sores, scarring or keloids. We may wait if the area is infected, broken or inflamed on treatment day. Keep taking prescribed medicine unless your prescriber says otherwise.

The AAD lists discomfort, swelling and redness as the most common side effects, usually lasting 1 to 3 days. Less often, laser can cause blistering, a cold sore flare-up, infection, scarring, or skin that turns lighter or darker. Some color changes do not fade.

Tell your clinician about every prescription medicine, over-the-counter medicine, supplement and topical product you use. Some can change how sensitive your skin is to light. When laser may not be worth your money: white, gray or very light hair that has too little pigment to target.
Temporary redness, warmth and mild swelling can happen after laser hair removal. Call InjectCo Fort Worth at (817) 285-5254 (8 AM to 8 PM daily) if the reaction is getting worse instead of better, or if you develop significant blistering, increasing pain, signs of infection or a worrying change in skin color. The clinical team will decide whether you need routine aftercare, an in-person check or further medical evaluation. If a reaction is severe while the clinic is closed, seek urgent medical care.
