At InjectCo MedSpa Cleburne, laser hair removal is performed by Paige, BSN, RN, on the Candela GentleMax Pro. Every new laser patient starts with her skin and hair check and a test patch. Before aesthetics, she spent six years as a pediatric critical care nurse.
She trained in neurotoxin and filler through InjectCo's own program, the Texas Academy of Medical Aesthetics. That is company training. It is not a state laser license, a laser certificate, or a credential from an independent board.
Texas regulates laser hair removal through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. The Texas Board of Nursing's Position Statement 15.9 says delivering laser energy is not an independent nursing function. So a nursing license alone does not authorize laser treatment. When I assess someone for laser hair removal, I separate two questions. First, can the device be used appropriately for this person's skin? Second, is the hair actually a good target for laser? Those are not the same question.
A patient may have a skin tone that the GentleMax Pro can accommodate. But if the hair is white, gray, or extremely light, there may not be enough pigment for the laser to target reliably.
I also look at the thickness and density of the hair. Coarse, dark hair is a very different target from fine facial hair.
Then I look at what the skin looks like today. Recent sun, self-tanner, irritation, medication changes, and previous reactions can all change the decision.
If laser does not have a good target, I would rather explain that before a patient buys a series. Sometimes another hair-removal method, including electrolysis, makes more sense.
Clinical insight from Paige, BSN, RN, InjectCo Cleburne.
Our Cleburne treatment room uses the Candela GentleMax Pro, an FDA-cleared system (510(k) K140122). It provides both 755 nm Alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelengths. Its FDA labeling lists hair reduction at both wavelengths on all six Fitzpatrick skin types, tanned skin included.
The Fitzpatrick scale describes patterns of skin response to UV exposure, and it is one piece of a laser assessment. Paige does not choose a wavelength from the Fitzpatrick number alone. Current skin pigment, recent sun, hair pigment and thickness, the treatment area, and how you responded before also matter.
Laser hair reduction relies on a principle called selective photothermolysis. Light at a suitable wavelength and pulse is absorbed by a target pigment and heats it, while unnecessary heating of nearby tissue is limited. For hair, the target is melanin in the hair and follicle.
Each follicle cycles through anagen (active growth), catagen (a short transition), and telogen (rest). Follicles are not all in the same phase at once. Repeat sessions let more actively growing hairs become useful targets. The AAD says to expect roughly a 10 to 25 percent reduction after the first treatment. That figure describes the first session only, not a forecast for the whole series.
Settings describe how the light is delivered. Fluence is the energy delivered over an area. Pulse duration is the length of each pulse. Spot size is the diameter of the beam. They are chosen for each person and area, so we do not publish setting charts.

Two separate things decide whether laser hair reduction is worth doing: whether your skin can be treated appropriately, and whether your hair gives the laser something to target. The GentleMax Pro's FDA labeling covers hair reduction on all six Fitzpatrick skin types, tanned skin included. That speaks to the skin question, not the hair one.
Laser hair reduction depends on pigment (melanin) in the hair and follicle, which is the target that absorbs the light. Very light blonde, gray, and white hair may not carry enough useful pigment to target reliably. Red hair can also respond poorly, depending on its pigment. So a device that suits your skin tone does not promise results on your hair.
Skin tone still shapes the risk. A 2011 study in Lasers in Medical Science followed 150 people with skin types IV to VI. They were treated with a long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser, mostly on the face. Of those, 86 percent had no complications, and the complications that did occur were temporary, most often darker patches. Burns, scarring, and pigment changes remain possible on any skin, which is why each assessment is individual.

Its FDA labeling covers skin types I to VI, which speaks to your skin. The laser still needs pigment in the hair to target, and white hair has little or none. Skin compatibility and hair-target suitability are separate questions, so we answer both before you start.
Often not reliably. Laser hair reduction targets melanin in the hair and follicle. Gray and very light blonde hairs may carry too little of it for the laser to target reliably. Red hair can respond poorly too. That is why we look at the hair itself before recommending a series.
If the hair has too little pigment for laser to target reliably, your clinician may tell you laser is a poor use of your time or money. For some low-pigment hairs, electrolysis may be worth discussing. It treats follicles one at a time and does not rely on hair pigment. It is not the better choice for everyone.
They are different decisions. The Fitzpatrick scale describes how skin responds to UV exposure, and it is one input. The wavelength choice also depends on your current skin pigment, recent sun, hair color and thickness, the area, and how you responded before.
The FDA labeling for the GentleMAX family lists hair-reduction indications on skin types I to VI, including tanned skin. That applies to both the 755 nm and the 1064 nm wavelengths. A label is not a guarantee of zero risk, and the clinician still chooses based on your assessment.
Shave the area only as instructed when you book. A razor clears the hair on the surface and keeps the root in the follicle, and the root is the part the laser has to find. Avoid waxing, plucking, and threading before treatment, because they pull the root out. Between sessions, shaving is the usual way to manage regrowth for the same reason, and your aftercare sheet says when you can start. Tell us about a recent tan, self-tanner, or new medicine before your visit.
A test patch tells us how a small area reacts to the planned settings. It lowers uncertainty, but it does not remove risk. Burns, blisters, and pigment changes can still happen during a full session.
The American Academy of Dermatology notes that most patients need multiple laser treatments, commonly 2 to 6. Your actual number depends on the treatment area, your hair, your skin, and how you respond. Treat that range as a guide rather than a promise.
For many patients, the AAD puts the next treatment roughly 4 to 6 weeks out. Hair follicles cycle through growth and rest on their own schedules, so waiting lets more hairs reach the active growth phase, when they make better targets. Your timing depends on the area and how your hair regrows.
It is an FDA device term. The GentleMAX clearance defines it as “the long-term, stable reduction in the number of hairs regrowing when measured at 6, 9, and 12 months after the completion of a treatment regime.” It does not mean every hair is gone for good.
Some can. The AAD says most patients stay free of hair on treated skin for months or even years. Hair that regrows tends to be less noticeable, finer, and lighter. Maintenance treatments are sometimes needed to keep an area clear.
The American Academy of Dermatology notes that most people return to everyday activities right away. Treated skin is often red and a little swollen at first, and heat, sweat, friction, and pool chemicals can make that irritation worse. Your aftercare sheet tells you when to go back to hard workouts, swimming, hot tubs, and saunas.
InjectCo postpones elective laser hair removal during pregnancy according to clinic policy. If you are breastfeeding, tell us at your assessment, and the clinical team will decide whether to go ahead or wait. You can start or restart your plan afterward, once we have checked your skin and hair again.

Temporary redness, swelling, and discomfort are common after treatment, and the American Academy of Dermatology notes they usually last 1 to 3 days. Less common risks include blistering, infection, scarring, and skin that turns darker (hyperpigmentation) or lighter (hypopigmentation). Some pigment changes can persist.
