Can I Shower After Botox? Dos And Don’ts For Aftercare

Table Of Contents

You’ve just had your Botox treatment and are excited to see a refreshed, confident look once the medicine settles. But you’re not sure what you should or shouldn’t do after your injections.

If you’re new to Botox, or even if you’ve had it before, it’s completely normal to have questions about what you can and can’t do afterward. One question we often hear is: “Can I shower after Botox?”

We know you want to get back into your daily routine as soon as possible, but there are a few important dos and don’ts to keep in mind after Botox. We’ll walk you through exactly when it’s safe to shower and share some general aftercare tips to help you get the best results possible.

Why Does Aftercare Matter?

You’re investing time and money into your appearance, so you want the effects of your Botox injections to last as long as possible. Taking proper care of the treated areas helps your results settle in smoothly and reduces the risk of complications.

In order to get the most out of your treatment, you’ll need to make sure Botox has time to settle. When you know how to handle the first hours and days after your injection session, you help set your skin up to look as renewed and smooth as possible.

Showering After Botox: When And How

  • When is it safe to hop in the shower? Many cosmetic professionals recommend waiting at least 6 to 8 hours before showering with hot water just to be sure your Botox settles. If you absolutely need to rinse off sooner, keep the water lukewarm or cool to avoid heat-related effects on the injection sites.
  • Why avoid a hot shower so soon? High temperatures can increase blood flow to your face. This may potentially move the Botox away from the target area, causing less-than-ideal results. Too much heat also increases your risk of bruising and swelling after injections.
  • What’s the best water temperature? It’s a good idea to stick with lukewarm for at least the first day. If you can’t take a cool shower, wait at least 24 hours before you use hot water.

Additional Dos And Don’ts For Post-Session Care

Your aftercare routine doesn’t end with the ideal time for showering. Here are a few extra tips to keep in mind:

Dos:

  • Stay Upright: For the first 4-6 hours, try not to lie down or bend over too much. This helps the Botox stay where it’s supposed to.
  • Keep Moving: Light facial movements (raising your eyebrows, frowning, smiling) can help the toxin settle into the right muscles—but keep it gentle.
  • Use Gentle Cleansers: If you’re washing your face, choose a mild, non-abrasive cleanser. Avoid scrubbing or using harsh exfoliants so you don’t irritate the injection sites.
  • Drink Plenty of Water: Staying hydrated is good for your skin and overall health. It can also help support the healing process and maximize the effects of Botox.

Don’ts:

  • No Excessive Heat: This means steering clear of saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga, and, yes, hot showers for at least 24 hours.
  • Skip the Intense Workouts: Strenuous exercise right after Botox can increase your heart rate and cause sweating, which may shift the treatment area.
  • Avoid Alcohol: Drinking can thin your blood and increase the likelihood of bruising, especially within the first 24 hours after your treatment.
  • Hold Off on Facials: Refrain from getting massages, facials, or any facial treatments for about a day or two. Applying direct pressure to your face can move the Botox around and affect your results.
