What Is This Craze With Ozempic/Wegovy For Weight Loss?

Table Of Contents

How Did This Wegovy Craze Start?

You may have heard of the newest weight loss craze known as “Ozempic” or ‘Wegovy.” Unlike many weight loss trends, this is not a fad diet for weight loss. The drug—Ozempic and known as Wegovy specifically for weight loss—has been used as a diabetes treatment for several years.

Since then, it seems like every beauty magazine and influencer has touched on the craze. From articles in Cosmopolitan to news stories, the craze began to spiral into the phenomenon it is now.

Does Ozempic Really Work?

The question on everyone’s mind is, “Does it really work?” The answer is yes. However, it should not be used casually, or by those who do not need to lose a significant amount of weight for health reasons. Wegovy causes weight loss by mimicking an appetite regulating hormone. This makes you feel full faster and reduce caloric intake.

According to studies, patients who took Wegovy for weight loss lost an average of 12.4% of their weight. This significant reduction in weight can help patients lead healthier lives and improve weight-related health conditions such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol. It can also help reduce the future risk of heart attack and stroke.

Who Qualifies?

Patients that currently qualify for Wegovy weight loss injections are:

  • Those who are considered obese (a BMI over 30)
  • Overweight people with a related health condition that could/would be improved with weight loss

People who do not fall in the two above categories should not seek Wegovy treatment. It is also essential that patients do not rely solely on Wegovy for weight loss, but also increase exercise and make dietary changes to promote long term weight loss.
