Needling works on the surface and the layer just below it. It does not refill a hollow under the cheekbone, and it does not stop the squint that etches crow’s feet. Volume is a job for facial fillers in Austin; lines that appear when you move are a job for Botox in Austin.
Plain microneedling relies on the needling alone. PRP microneedling adds concentrated plasma from a small blood draw, which some patients choose for scarring or tired-looking skin. Texas allows a physician to delegate cosmetic medical procedures to licensed staff, registered nurses included, once a patient has been evaluated and written protocols are in place (22 Texas Administrative Code §169.25). That is the framework your session follows. Dr. Allen sets the protocols; he does not perform each session.

The authorization is tied to specific devices and specific areas, not to everything sold as microneedling. The FDA also explains that products which do not reach the living layers of skin are generally not regulated as medical devices, which is one reason a home roller is not the same as a clinic session (FDA on microneedling devices).

Expected for a few days. Pink or red skin, warmth, tightness, mild swelling and dryness, sometimes with light flaking as the skin renews. On darker skin the area may look darker for a short time rather than red.
These settle on their own for most people. A gentle cleanser, a plain moisturizer and daily SPF are usually all you need.
Not expected. Pain that keeps building, pus, redness that spreads, fever, blisters, a cold sore outbreak, or patches of color that do not fade can signal infection or a pigment change.

Most plans are a series of about 3 to 6 sessions, 4 to 6 weeks apart. Pores and texture may need fewer, and acne scars usually need more. Genniel gives you a number after examining your skin.
Expect pink skin, a little like a mild sunburn, for 1 to 3 days. The American Academy of Dermatology advises waiting 24 hours before wearing makeup. Most people go about their day quickly, with sunscreen every morning and no retinoids until Genniel says to restart.
Choose microneedling if texture or acne scarring is your main concern, because it builds collagen. Choose a peel if you mainly want brighter, more even tone from the surface layer. Many patients use both on separate visits, and Genniel can help you decide at a free consultation.

PRP microneedling pairs a standard needling session with platelet-rich plasma. A small amount of your blood is drawn and spun to separate the plasma, which is applied to the freshly treated skin. It is an add-on, not an FDA-approved treatment, and it costs $799 a session or $1,999 for three.
Numbing cream goes on first, so most people describe pressure, warmth and a light scratching feeling. Areas over bone, such as the forehead, can feel a bit sharper than the cheeks.
We postpone your session if your acne is inflamed, the skin is infected, a cold sore is active, you have a new tan or sunburn, or you are pregnant or breastfeeding. The FDA adds a few more reasons microneedling may not suit you: isotretinoin within the past 6 months, blood thinners, keloid scarring and a weakened immune system.
For rolling and shallow boxcar scars, many patients feel a series is worth it, because the change comes from their own new collagen. It does little for deep wrinkles from movement or for lost volume, and Genniel will tell you if that is your main concern.
New collagen can last a long time, but it fades gradually with age. Daily sunscreen, not smoking and an optional yearly maintenance visit help you hold on to the change.

The FDA has authorized specific microneedling devices for specific uses: improving the appearance of facial acne scars, facial wrinkles and abdominal scars in adults 22 and older. The FDA tells patients to ask how a device is cleaned and whether a new needle cartridge is used each time, and it warns that reusing a cartridge is unsafe even after cleaning. Ask us anything about how your session is set up.
Infection, a cold sore flare, swollen lymph nodes, track-like lines on the face, stinging when products go on, and darkening or lightening of the skin can happen, and some of these can last. Following your aftercare lowers the risk.
