Is Preventive Botox a Scam? Here’s What Experts Say

Table Of Contents

Everyone’s getting Botox—and not just as a regular corrective treatment anymore.

If you’ve been keeping up with the latest cosmetic injection trends, chances are you’ve heard of preventive Botox and how it stops potential wrinkles from developing or forming on the skin of young patients.

But what is it exactly? And what do medical experts have to say about it?

What Is Preventive Botox?

Preventive Botox is an injectable made from botulinum toxin type A that claims to prevent the formation of future wrinkles and expression lines on your face.

Preventive Botox essentially stops visible signs of aging, like wrinkles, fine lines, and crow’s feet, from forming. It’s often recommended for patients in their mid-to-late 20s to early 30s.

How Does Preventive Botox Work?

Preventive botulinum toxin injections work by blocking the nerve signals to underlying muscles that are prone to repeated movements or facial expressions.

Similar to other neurotoxin injections, injecting Botox into your skin prevents wrinkle formation by completely freezing your facial muscles. For instance, using preventive Botox on your forehead muscles lessens the chances of deep forehead lines forming.

Corrective Botox vs. Preventive Botox: What’s the Difference?

Instead of getting rid of stubborn lines and deep-set wrinkles when you’re older, which involves several injection sites or different treatment areas to achieve the full effect of a youthful face, preventive Botox can help you stay ahead of the game.

Let’s review the most significant differences between corrective and preventive Botox.

Safety

Preventive Botox is generally safe since it uses the same FDA-approved formulation as corrective Botox. Botulinum toxin type A is a tried-and-tested neurotoxin that has been on the market for over 20 years.

Cosmetic Purpose

While they share the same formulation and safety profile, the main difference between regular Botox and preventive Botox lies in their cosmetic purpose or goal.

Regular Botox, otherwise known as corrective Botox, is used to treat wrinkles and visible lines caused by muscle contractions. In short, regular Botox treats deep wrinkles and etched-in lines from repeated facial expressions or overly expressive muscles.

On the other hand, preventive Botox is a proactive anti-aging solution that prevents lines from forming as quickly as they normally would without Botox.

Targeted Areas

Common treatment areas of corrective Botox include frown lines, bunny lines (nose wrinkles), and etched lines (static or permanent wrinkles) on the face.

Preventive Botox injections can be used on facial areas similar to the common treatment areas of standard Botox. However, it typically targets areas where potential lines can eventually form as a result of repeated facial expressions, such as the following:

  • Forehead lines
  • Glabellar lines (between your eyebrows)
  • Crow’s feet (around your eyes)
  • Smile lines (around your lips)

Preventive Botox: Here’s What Experts Say

Medical experts who are qualified to make valid claims on preventive Botox include:

  • Plastic surgeons
  • Board-certified dermatologists
  • Licensed physicians
  • Aesthetic nurse injectors

Generally, these professionals believe that the aesthetics industry still hasn’t fully explored the scientific side of preventive Botox, especially since it’s still a relatively new treatment compared to standard Botox.

Most existing claims on the effectiveness of preventive Botox are purely anecdotal at this point, with younger patients speaking favorably about the trending treatment based on their own success stories and experiences.

While there’s still no definitive hard data to support the anti-aging claims of preventive Botox, Dr. James Zins, a plastic surgeon, doesn’t completely dismiss the theoretical assumptions of the treatment.

In fact, Dr. Zins calls the theoretical possibilities of preventive Botox a “reasonable assumption,” even though the treatment has yet to prove its operational benefits in a results-driven study.

“The concept is twofold,” says Dr. Zins. He argues that people get preventive Botox to, first, break the habit of a repeated facial expression, like frowning or smiling, and then to train or weaken muscles to not be as active, ultimately preventing early wrinkle formation.

Dr. Ife J. Rodney, a dermatologist, uses a creative visualization—a crumpled paper—to better describe how preventive Botox can potentially work for patients seeking to preserve their youthful-looking skin.

Dr. Rodney argues that it’s easier to not crumple the paper in the first place (that is, a wrinkle-free face or a face with faint lines using preventive Botox) than it is to flatten an already crumpled paper (a face with visible wrinkles being treated with corrective Botox).

Kiara DeWitt, BSN, RN, CPN, and founder of InjectCo, says that preventive Botox can be used “in the right context—but cautiously and under a skilled provider’s care.” She says that the best candidates are patients in their late 20s–30s with strong facial muscle movement, especially those with a family history of early wrinkles.

Am I a Suitable Candidate for Preventive Botox?

If you want to start Botox injections to lessen the appearance of faint wrinkles and lines, the following qualifications may make you a more suitable candidate than most:

  • You’re a relatively younger patient in your mid-to-late 20s to early 30s.
  • You have small wrinkles or lines that are visible even with a neutral facial expression.
  • You have a family history of deep wrinkles or relatives who developed them at a young age.

Is Preventive Botox Worth It?

You may wonder if preventative Botox is a scam, and while medical experts believe it’s still too early to support its claims, they aren’t dismissing the treatment just yet.

At the very least, they’re giving it a chance. Since it’s a relatively new claim of a tried-and-tested procedure, it’s worth keeping an eye out for preventive Botox and its rising trajectory in the aesthetics world.

But keep in mind that Botox itself is not new. In fact, it has been on the market as a cosmetic injectable for over 20 years and has consistently and effectively been used for science-backed treatments that create evidence-based results.
