What Is Xeomin?
Xeomin is a formulation of Botulinum toxin type A that does contain unnecessary additives or proteins found in Botox and Dysport. Otherwise, Xeomin works in the same way as other Botulinum toxin injections. It blocks signals from the brain telling a muscle to contract.
When administered correctly, it does not permanently alter the necessary movements needed for making facial expressions or other actions. However, it does reduce or halt unneeded, small muscle contractions that contribute to wrinkle formation.
Like Botox and Dysport, Xeomin is a shallow injection into the facial muscles. You can undergo Xeomin treatment in many of the same areas as other neurotoxin injections. For example, a few possible treatments include:
Forehead lines
Crow’s feet
- And more:
- Frown lines (glabella)
- Lip lines
- Masseter
- Migraines
- Excessive sweating
- Bunny lines
- Non-surgical brow lift
- Platysmal bands
- Chin dimples
Benefits
The benefits of Xeomin go beyond wrinkle reduction. Providers also use Xeomin to treat some medical conditions.
Some of the benefits of Xeomin include:
- Helps smooth unwanted wrinkles
- Prevent future wrinkle formation
- Takes less than an hour
- Little to no recovery time
- Results visible within two weeks
- Less likely to cause allergic reactions
- Reduced risk of building resistance
- Can help patients who have built immunity to other neurotoxin options to continue to see results
- Virtually painless
- Safe and effective
- Few side effects
- Combinable with dermal fillers
- Does not affect the range of motion, but limits the hyperactivity of the muscles
- Performed by a qualified and experienced provider
Xeomin vs. Botox vs. Dysport
With more neurotoxin options available, choosing the right one for you is not always easy. Your Botox Bar provider can help discuss the pros and cons of each as it pertains to you and your specific needs. Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are all amazing treatments and can provide the wrinkle relaxation you are looking for. While the differences are minor, the list below details some of the differences between Xeomin vs. Botox vs. Dysport.
- All use different dosages
- Xeomin contains no additive or complex proteins like Botox and Dysport
- Dysport may kick in slightly faster, Botox next, and Xeomin may take the longest
- Increased diffusion across the treatment area with Dysport
- Unlikely to develop a resistance to Xeomin
- Dysport costs less per unit on average, but requires more units per treatment
Outside of these differences, individual patients may notice more results or fewer side effects from one injectable over the others. It is common for patients to try more than one type of neurotoxin to find which one provides the best results.

Xeomin Before & After
Preparing For Treatment
Preparing for Xeomin treatment is not intensive and many patients do not make any major changes to their usual routine. First, plan on not wearing makeup to your appointment. While your provider will sterilize the area before injecting, this will remove the makeup anyway. Second, skip the caffeine on the morning of treatment. While not strictly necessary, if you are prone to bruising, caffeine can increase the chances of bruising. Finally, make sure that your appointment is scheduled at least two weeks before any important event you want to look your best for.
Also, if this is your first time undergoing Xeomin or neurotoxin injections, be prepared to discuss your medical history and lifestyle. They will also want to know more about your specific goals. Your provider can help you determine if Xeomin injections are right for you.
Xeomin Injections
The first step your provider will take when applying your Xeomin injections is to disinfect the area. Occasionally, numbing agents may be applied, but most patients do not require them for such quick, shallow injections. Then, your provider will ask you to make certain expressions that cause the targeted muscles to contract and wrinkle. This allows your provider to see your unique wrinkle pattern and see exactly where to inject to address your dynamic wrinkles.
The injections themselves usually take less than ten minutes unless treating several areas. Each area will likely involve multiple injections. You should remain perfectly comfortable throughout the entire procedure.
Aftercare
The aftercare and recovery following Xeomin injections are minimal. Immediately following your injections, you can return to work and the majority of your daily activities. Your provider will likely want you to limit exercise and activity to prevent sweating which can complicate your results. These restrictions are in place for about two days.
Shorter term instructions may include avoiding bending over or laying down for about three to four hours after your injections. It is okay to rest, but it is best to avoid laying flat as this can impact the way the product diffuses. After a few hours, you can lay normally. Still, your provider will likely want you to avoid laying directly on the treatment area. You will also need to avoid alcohol for the rest of the day.
FAQs
Like other neurotoxins, Xeomin is expected to last around three to four months on average. Though, certain patients may see it last as long as six months. It may also last longer in certain areas that are less active in general such as the bunny lines.
All neurotoxin injections including Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau are all safe. No one type of neuromodulator injection is safer than the others. One example here is for patients prone to allergic reactions or those allergic to the proteins in Botox or Dysport.
However, if you have had an allergic reaction to other Botulinum toxin products, you will still want to use caution. Especially if you have not pinpointed the ingredient you are allergic to. It is still possible to have an allergic reaction to Xeomin. However, it is significantly less likely since the unnecessary proteins are not present. For the average patient, though, there is no significant difference in safety between Xeomin and Botox.
The cost of Xeominh is $12 per unit. The exact number of units required will vary between patients, treatment areas, and what is necessary to provide optimal results.
