Is oral semaglutide as effective as injection?

Table Of Contents

Trying to manage weight with diabetes can be tedious. Too much weight loss or gain can be dangerous for one’s health, and thus, it is vital to strike a balance. The semaglutide came as a rescue for the people struggling with this. However, there is a debate about whether to take semaglutide as oral medication or injections. Let’s explore.

Introduction to Semaglutide

To start with, you must understand the function of  GLP -1 ( Glucagon Like Peptide – 1) which plays a crucial role in managing blood sugar levels and appetite. When we eat, the hormone slows down the digestion and gives the feeling of fullness. It regulates our insulin and blood sugar levels. GLP-1 agonists like Semaglutide, mimic this hormone to manage type 2 diabetes and support weight management by controlling food intake.

Oral Semaglutide: Benefits and Drawbacks

Injections of semaglutide might seem frightening to many, thus oral semaglutide came as an easy option to use and gain the same effects.  Let’s have a look at the benefits:

  • It is convenient to use as it is taken orally
  • There is no discomfort from needles or injections
  • The pill is taken daily, which leads to better outcomes

There are some potential drawbacks, too, such as:

  • The absorption can be difficult in oral medication due to stomach acidity
  • It is to be taken on an empty stomach
  • One has to avoid eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes afterward.
  • You have a responsibility to take the medication daily.

Is Oral Semaglutide as Effective as Injections?

Both forms of medication show results effectively, however, let’s go a bit deeper to understand the effects.

  • Blood Sugar Control

As both work fine in lowering blood sugar levels, it is found in studies that oral semaglutide can achieve significant reductions in blood sugar levels, making it a viable alternative for effective control, if you dislike needles.

  • Weight Loss

Again, both work the way they are designed to but the patients with gastrointestinal issues may benefit more from injectable Semaglutide because they may have trouble absorbing oral medications.

  • Safety

Both forms have common side effects, including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. These side effects are generally mild and tend to decrease over time as your body adjusts to the medication.

Final Thought

Weight management and controlling Type – 2 diabetes go hand-in-hand with the semaglutide medication. However, it is important to remember that it should be taken only when prescribed by a physician. The oral semaglutide is a revolution for those looking for an alternative to injections. Patients having acidity in the stomach might not like taking oral medication as it is less effective in that case. Consult your doctor for the right form of medication before jumping into any decision.
